ACTION ALERT: Tell the Senate we’re still watching!

sign saying health care is a human right

The Senate is rushing their ACA repeal bill to a vote THIS MONTH. Some Senators claim that their version of the bill will be better than the version passed by the House – but they’re refusing to show it to us so we can judge for ourselves. The Senate is hoping you’ll tune out after hearing their empty promises, so they can pass a bill that does the same thing as the House-passed bill: take health care away from 23 million Americans, and destroy Medicaid as we know it.

They’re trying to do this fast, because they want to get the bill passed before you realize what they’re up to. Normally, when Senators write and introduce a bill, they debate it on the Senate floor, discuss it in committees, and hold hearings where people who could be affected by the bill have a chance to testify. But the Senate has decided that on an issue as critical as health care, they can’t be bothered with that pesky democratic process.

They’re feeling confident because they are not getting as many calls as before – they think you’ve given up. Help us show them they’re wrong.

Script for calling your Senators
My name is [your full name]. I’m a constituent of Senator [Name], and I live in [your town]. I’m calling to ask the Senator to reject any health care proposal that would convert Medicaid funding to a per capita cap, or take health insurance away from people in our state. Per capita caps would shift the cost of Medicaid to the states, forcing them to choose between extreme tax hikes or gambling with the lives of their most vulnerable residents–all to fund a massive tax break for the wealthiest Americans. People with disabilities like [me/ my family member/ my friends] are not disposable, and our funding is not your trust fund. Please vote AGAINST repealing the Affordable Care Act. We’re counting on you to do the right thing.
  • Send your Senators a letter or a #ProtectOurCare postcard. ASAN’s #ProtectOurCare Postcard Center has templates and talking points that you can use. Calls and letters are the most effective, but you can also email your Senators’ offices, or share your story via social media and tag your Senators.

Congress is closer than ever to passing this devastating bill. We have to stand in their way. Make sure your Senator gets the message – Nothing About Us, Without Us!
