The Senate is rushing their ACA repeal bill to a vote THIS MONTH. Some Senators claim that their version of the bill will be better than the version passed by the House – but they’re refusing to show it to us so we can judge for ourselves. The Senate is hoping you’ll tune out after hearing their empty promises, so they can pass a bill that does the same thing as the House-passed bill: take health care away from 23 million Americans, and destroy Medicaid as we know it.
They’re trying to do this fast, because they want to get the bill passed before you realize what they’re up to. Normally, when Senators write and introduce a bill, they debate it on the Senate floor, discuss it in committees, and hold hearings where people who could be affected by the bill have a chance to testify. But the Senate has decided that on an issue as critical as health care, they can’t be bothered with that pesky democratic process.
They’re feeling confident because they are not getting as many calls as before – they think you’ve given up. Help us show them they’re wrong.
- Call, call, call. You can find your Senators’ contact information by entering your ZIP code at contactingcongress.org. If you find it easier to leave an answering machine message than to talk to a staffer on the phone, you can call after work hours, and your message will still be counted. If you don’t speak, you can call using your AAC device, or get a friend to call in and read your message.
No matter how you do it, your call is critical right now. Here’s a script you can use:
- Send your Senators a letter or a #ProtectOurCare postcard. ASAN’s #ProtectOurCare Postcard Center has templates and talking points that you can use. Calls and letters are the most effective, but you can also email your Senators’ offices, or share your story via social media and tag your Senators.
Congress is closer than ever to passing this devastating bill. We have to stand in their way. Make sure your Senator gets the message – Nothing About Us, Without Us!
