This back to school season, educate yourself while empowering self-advocates with the tools they need to know their rights! Our learning sessions are community-led virtual presentations. They are taught by autistic self-advocates and community members. The topics are about advocacy, but go beyond ASAN’s usual focus. We are hosting 3 learning sessions in August and September.
Here are the learning sessions:
Black, Brown, and Disabled: Unpacking Racialized Ableism in Education – Dr. Destiny Huff
Thursday, August 21st at 4:00 PM ET
In this session our guest speaker, Dr. Destiny Huff will talk about how racism and ableism hurt Black and Latine students with disabilities at school. Schools in the United States are more likely to punish, silence, and segregate Black and Latine students with disabilities. This discrimination against Black and Latine students with disabilities is racist and ableist. This presentation talks about how systemic racism and ableism in schools hurts multiply-marginalized students. From biased referrals to punishments that exclude them, students of color with disabilities face more barriers to access, inclusion and affirmation.

Anti-Fatness and Ableism – Stephenie Baldassarre
Thursday, August 28th at 4:00 PM ET
Anti-fatness and ableism often show up in different ways, but they’re deeply connected. Anti-fatness is the word for the ways in which fat people are discriminated against because of their weight. Both anti-fatness and ableism are rooted in harmful ideas about which bodies are ‘normal,’ valuable, or worthy of respect. In this presentation, we’ll learn a bit about how anti-fatness and ableism overlap and affect people’s everyday lives—from doctor’s offices to sidewalks—and why it’s so important to address them together.
